Project summary:

Pedestrian fatalities are increasing and account for a growing percentage of all roadway fatalities. This highlights the urgent need for effective interventions. Transportation stakeholders are uniquely positioned to lead efforts to improve pedestrian safety. Stakeholder beliefs and values influence safety (e.g., Prioritizing traffic flow over pedestrian safety can hinder the effective implementation of safety measures). Therefore, understanding shared values and beliefs about pedestrian safety is critical to:

  • growing a positive traffic safety culture,
  • deploying effective strategies to improve pedestrian safety,
  • and achieving our nation's goal of zero deaths on our roadways.

This project provides valuable insights into the current state of pedestrian safety culture among transportation stakeholders and provides resources to help stakeholders grow supportive beliefs, prioritize pedestrian safety, and engage in meaningful conversations.

Check out these pedestrian resources and tools to support your efforts:

Tools and Resources to Improve Pedestrian Safety - The tools and resources within this toolkit are designed to help leaders and stakeholders across many disciplines improve pedestrian safety by prioritizing the safety of all road users throughout a project's lifecycle and elevating collaboration.

The toolkit includes:

  • a resource focused on growing public participation and tools that address growing supportive beliefs to improve pedestrian safety,
  • ways to prioritize pedestrian safety and bolster current approaches,
  • ways to tell your pedestrian safety story,
  • how to engage in meaningful conversations about pedestrian safety, and
  • ways to promote pedestrian safety across the social environment.

Resources and Tools to Improve Pedestrian Safety Final Report - A document that includes details about the steps we took in the project and what we learned.

Pedestrian Project Poster - A poster to share this project with others interested in growing pedestrian safety.

Pedestrian Safety Webinar - A webinar to share insights from the project.  We share what we learned from a review of literature that explored existing research on pedestrian safety culture and interviews with stakeholders. We share data from a survey of 336 stakeholders on their beliefs, support, and engagement in pedestrian safety strategies. We also highlight the toolkit described above.

This project is sponsored by the Traffic Safety Culture Transportation Pooled Fund TPF-5(444) and led by Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) in cooperation with U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration. The project's final report has been accepted by MDT.
